About

We built this place slowly.

Twelve rooms, and a preference for doing less of everything, properly.

Driftwood started with a simple idea. A guesthouse should feel like someone's actual home, not a lobby.

A plain timber door in a plastered wall, with the shadow of a tree moving across it.

01

There is no reception desk. There is a door, and usually someone already holding it open.

We kept it small on purpose, twelve rooms across four types, so every guest gets looked after properly instead of processed through a check-in line. Nobody here has a badge with their name on it.

Late sun crossing a woven cane headboard and white pillows.

02

The building leans on what is already here.

Reclaimed wood, local stone, linen that softens with every wash. Nothing is imported just to look expensive. The timber in the stair came off a boat that stopped being a boat, and the stone was cut on this atoll.

Late sun coming through a sheer curtain onto folded linen.

Everything in the rooms gets better with use, which is the point.

A low timber table set with a glass jug and two cups, morning light through a screen.

03

The reef is a two-minute walk from the door.

Most mornings start with someone deciding whether to swim before or after breakfast. Breakfast is served until it stops being morning, which we have never defined precisely.

A sandy lane between plastered walls, trees closing over it, nobody about.

04

Maafushi is a working local island, not a resort bubble.

Fishermen still bring in the morning catch a few streets over. There is a school, a health centre, a football pitch that fills up at six in the evening. Staying at Driftwood means being part of that rhythm for a few days, not sealed off from it.

A dark room with its shutters folded back onto a wall of palms.

05

We built this place slowly, and we would rather guests feel that pace than rush through it.

If you want a packed itinerary, there are islands that will sell you one. We would rather you found the good bit of the reef on your third morning and went back to it on your fourth.

The spiral weave of a palm fibre basket, the light falling away on one side.

Twelve rooms is the whole plan. There is no phase two.
